If you love cyber-punk, hacking, space-flight, multiple planet locations, and intrigue, I'd highly recommend this story. The mystery plot is smart and attractive. The adventures that Jane and Devin were forced into are breath taking, but not over exaggerating. Their problems with their parents are so real in our current world. The romance and friendship make perfect common sense. The emotions that experienced by the characters created in the novel are very touching. The religion discussion is well thought out.
The novel is lean no excessive descriptions of anything. But the descriptions are sufficient to all the messages they convey. It is easy to read because the story is well organized and the mystery is well designed. It is enjoyable to read because the flow of the book is smooth, the characters are lovely, and there are a lot of well described beautiful sceneries. There are many characters created in the novel and they are distinguished beings that one can relate to. The artificial intelligence sounds so real that makes me think on multiple issues Do we really want to see a perfect human being? How do we define a perfect human being? What really means to be a human? Also, as a parent do we really want our children to be perfect in our standards? This book gives Sci-fi novels another dimension. If you do not want to think on anything, then just enjoy the nice writing!
Some Science Fiction novels dive right in and expect you to catch up. Not so with “Artificial Absolutes” by Mary Fan. This novel eases into the story, starting almost as a romance, tempting you with a soft pace – until you Jane is hanging under an elevator with a robot looking for her, that it. That kinda changes the tone a bit.
From that moment on, this book is all Sci-Fi, and ALL business. Mary Fan didn’t just delve into character building, she launched into full on Universe building. There is incredibly advanced technology yet the aliens that serve as a staple in most of the genre are missing, though the odd fish crops up here and there. Cybercrime, and cyber corruption is at the center and forefront of this novel – the power that can be wielded by a few key strokes and a touch of knowledge. Lives can be destroyed or rebuilt, and new creations can be made.
This story is captivating, and a bit unnerving. Amongst the cyber wire and running, Fan poses several truly deep philosophical questions that will set you mind to spinning, in fact, from beginning to end – this book is one long philosophical – and theological - question.

Dick nod with approval and you have "Artificial Absolutes," the debut novel of Mary Fan, a young author on her way up. The heroine here is Jane Colt, the daughter of a wealthy businessman and (VIP) very important politician mother. She's a rebellious twenty-something-year-old office drone who wants to escape the smothering expectations of her parents and find her own way. Well, Jane doesn't have to wait long for her destiny to call, as author Fan introduces the kinds of pitfalls that befall every well-drawn hero, and these challenges come from all directions. She must rescue her kidnapped boyfriend, expose the truth about her brother's bogus murder rap, and discover the truth which may or may not go against all of the principles her parents and most of society have forced upon her.
What a ride! Jane is a multidimensional character who ponders deep philosophical matters, smirks in the face of danger, handles a starship and a variety of weapons, and shows all of the skills, including compassion, needed to evade and overcome a galaxy of antagonistic forces on her quest to find the ultimate truth in a story where deception spares no part of the galaxy. Aided only by her renegade brother, Devin, a bad boy who's trying to turn his life around, and a few talented programming nerds, Jane is a worthy match for all comers, and I cannot wait for the sequel.
