The Kencyr have a phrase, "to ride a rathorn," referring to a task too dangerous either to accomplish or to give up. This is true for Jame both figuratively, given her military career in a college which no Highborn girl has ever attended before, and literally, in that she is being stalked by one of these murderous, ivory-clad creatures whose mother she killed and who is now after her blood. All in all, Jame's school days are shaping up to be anything but golden.

Pat Hodgell can't remember a time when she wasn't passionately interested in science fiction and fantasy. She's sold stories to such anthologies as Berkley Showcase, Elsewhere III, and Imaginary Lands and has also published four novels. God Stalk and Dark of the Moon, the novels included in The God Stalker Chronicles, begin her critically praised fantasy saga which is concerned not! only with high adventure, but also with questions of personal identity, religion, politics, honor, and arboreal drift. She earned her doctorate at the University of Minnesota with a dissertation on Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe, and is a graduate of both the Clarion and the Milford Writers Workshops. Recently retired, she was a lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in modern British literature and composition, and teaches an distant training course on science fiction and fantasy for the University of Minnesota. Pat lives in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in a nineteenth-century wood-framed house, which has been in her family for generations. In addition to writing and teaching, she attends science fiction conventions, collects yarn, knits, embroiders, raises cats, and makes her own Christmas cards.

First of all, don't start with this book. Go read the Godstalker chronicles. Why not? The cost per book is as low as many self published books and it is far beyond even most series in this genre (fantasy action/adventure.) In fact, why not admit it? Right now I think its the best.OK, we've got our standard heroine. She's tough, she's gritty, she's scary. (But I should mention that she is NOT a bombshell, she's repeatedly described as flat chested and scrawny then on the cover, well, you look at it.) OK, so you always know she's going to win. It's fate! But in this case at least it really is, no batting about with the "lil ol' me" complex here. And the world, the richness of the characters and the plot development. You'll get the point after the first two books. Or maybe you won't. But pay attention.
We're all fanatics here. I'd guess we all love this genre or we wouldn't be reading this series, but most of us think its one of the best. SO well worth the read. You want proof? Someone writes a reasonably well thought out dishing of the 5th book (which I disagree with, but still) and garners 16 (!) negative votes and only 2 positive (one from yours truly). These people LOVE this series. Don't you wonder why? I think you should.
Perhaps you won't. But you'll at least love the first book. And I think you'll be back for more.
I read like a banshee, sometimes staying up all night when I buy new books. I am on book 6 after two weeks. Give it a try.

I like the plots and the people. Jame/Torison are great characters, and despite switching back and forth from one viewpoint to the other, neither side feels less than the other.
This is another book in my all time favorite series. Starting with Godstalk. Every time a new book in the series comes out I reread the whole series, and still enjoy them all.
My favorite, favorite book of all time. If there is a book I would love to see turned into a series of movies THIS IS IT!
Love these detailed Sci-Fi stories ... Can hardly stop reading!! Just read past the few spelling & syntax errors.
Not ready for story to be over, and it isn't, just this book. Can't wait to get next. First read the first two parts over 25 years ago and like it as much now as when I was young.
I read the first book years ago and thought"this would make a really awesome series..." and promptly forgot about it for a decade or so. Turns out the author agreed and went about writing all but apparently the very last book while I wasnt paying attention! I highly recommend all of these as a fun, interesting read.
It is Godstalk what is not to love the ingenious mind of Hodgell.
